UNDER THE COVERS – A Chicken without its Feathers!
With this wildlife bronze sculpture of a chicken without its feathers, I wanted to show the pre-historic shapes of chickens. We rarely see the structure of these birds.
Feathers cover most of a chicken’s body and some even have fur on their legs and feet. Birds shed their feathers, and start with their head feathers. This happens once a year and starts in the autumn.
When you really study a chicken or a cockerel, you realise all you see is a mountain of feathers and in fact their body underneath that soft and cuddly beauty is a rather boney pre-historic shell.
Having sculpted a number of hens and cockerels, I wanted to portray the bare bones of a chicken – I wanted to reveal what is so often not seen ‘under the covers’! This sculpture can be cast as a limited edition in bronze or bronze resin.
